Listening to this now, I like it. He finally bit the bullet and made a record with additional instrumentation, rather than just his 12-string acoustic. I've always preferred Jack Rose (possibly the best guitarist I've seen live, other than Kawabata Makoto) but Blackshaw is a beast in his own realm of music. Their styles are pretty different but at the end of the day they're both two guys with guitars. So far the record is similar to his other works in that it has a romantic, dreamy and almost fantasy/forest sound to it, though the last part may be pushing it. The difference is that it's not really as droning or layered as there's more picking involved, yet the songs are still mostly lengthy. His old stuff made me think of Eastern/meditative music, but the newer stuff reminds me of almost medieval/baroque/Death In June/gothic folk whatever the fuck.
So yeah, it's as excellent as anything else he's released but this record is more down the woodsy folk path than the enlightened sunshrine path.
